Osteoporosis and low bone mass
What is osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a condition where the bones become fragile and there is a significant risk of hip or spine fracture. While more common in women, osteoporosis occurs in men, as well.
Osteopenia or low bone mass is a condition where the bones are beginning to weaken, but many individuals do not need medication, yet. Lifestyle intervention and supplements at this stage can be very effective at reducing the need for medication and the risk of osteoporosis or fracture.
Osteoporosis and osteopenia are preventative conditions, meaning the goal is to prevent the fracture event from occurring.
It is critical to reduce fracture risk as 40-60% of individuals who suffer a hip fracture will not regain their function or independence after a fracture event!
Loss of function after hip fracture
However, if a fracture has occurred, you still need a physician to reduce the chance of another fracture!
At Tennessee Direct Rheumatology, we can help you meet your goals of preventing fracture, reducing risk of a second fracture or just provide an assessment of your fracture risk!
What can we offer?
At Tennessee Direct Rheumatology (TDR), we have a passion for bone health as many individuals with autoimmune disease or arthritis also live with a risk of hip or spine fracture.
TDR has the ability to provide consultative services to assess your risk of fracture, provide lifestyle management recommendations, offer medications (if needed) and follow your bone density long term.
We have programs specific to your needs! Prefer lifestyle intervention and supplements over osteoporosis medications? We can offer that!
