Fibromyalgia

  • Fibromyalgia is a disorder that results in chronic joint or muscle pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance and impairment in daily function.

Fibromyalgia is not considered an autoimmune disorder, but a nervous system disorder that results in abnormal levels of pain processing.

There is no single known cause of fibromyalgia, but many things contribute to pain and fatigue, such as sleep, physical fitness, diet and stress levels.

  • Yes! Fibromyalgia has many treatment options available.

The approach we take at Tennessee Direct Rheumatology begins with a comprehensive evaluation of symptoms, history taking, physical exam and evaluation of underlying disorders.

  • Fibromyalgia is a disorder that requires a collaborative approach between the patient, the physician and potentially other specialists.

The most effective treatment centers around lifestyle intervention, including increasing amounts of aerobic activity, stress management techniques, dietary intervention, addressing sleep health and herbal supplements.

  • Generally, medications can help reduce fibromyalgia symptoms in a select number of patients.

Studies support around 30% of patients with fibromyalgia achieve some degree of pain reduction.

No single medication has been proven to be effective in fibromyalgia long-term.

Please note it is the policy of Tennessee Direct Rheumatology not to provide controlled substances.

  • At Tennessee Direct Rheumatology, we believe in intensive lifestyle intervention for management of fibromyalgia symptoms as this results in the best long-term outcomes for patients.

We are happy to provide consultation services, comprehensive physical exam and laboratory evaluations, and when appropriate, non-controlled substances that may improve symptoms.

We believe that healing comes from a comprehensive management plan between a patient and a physician.

We also recommend an osteopathic manipulative medicine evaluation and treatment plan for those with chronic musculoskeletal pain.
